Download of the Day: Opera Mobile

phone.pngWhen I picked up the Palm 750, I immediately started looking for a different mobile browser to use other than Internet Explorer. I have always preferred Firefox over Opera, but there is no doubt that Opera is a fantastic browser. Unfortunately Firefox does not currently have any mobile offerings for their great browser. I had read good things about Opera Mobile, and thought I would give it a go.

Opera Mobile installed easily, giving me the option to install it on the phone or my storage card. Opera Mobile loads fast, and runs fasts. I originally thought tabbed browsing on a mobile devices was ridiculous, but Opera does a very good job of making it functional. Opera Mobile also gives you several different viewing options for web pages, including the ability to turn the browser on it’s side for widescreen viewing.

There were a couple down sides to Opera Mobile. The program costs $24, which isn’t a bad price tag but in a world where browsers are free it might be difficult for some to swallow. In addition Opera Mobile bookmarks are not compatible with Microsoft Voice Command, which I have grown to be depended on. Lastly the registration for Opera Mini is tied to the hardware, so when I had to reset my phone for Cingular I had to obtain anew registration key from Opera which took a couple days.

All in all, it’s much better that Internet Explorer and comes in many different flavors for your mobile devices, smart phones, PDA’s, etc.
