How to Balance Blogging and the Summer
For those of us that do not blog for a living, we have to find time to come up with good content. I recently started a new job, and on top of it decided to switch Operating Systems; so I have been behind in my blogging. On top of that it’s summer, the time where we all get distracted with the nice weather, vacation, house projects, and just all around living outside the 1’s and 0’s. Yesterday I hauled 6 yards of dirt to our new garden area, and by the time I was done I wanted nothing more than to just lay down. So what are ways to balance the summer and blogging.
Day to Day Articles:
Write some articles in advance, and have them on file for the week. Then instead of being up late posting, you can just hit the submit button. Obviously this does not work if you blog about news events. You can even setup a plug-in that will automatically post your articles for you after they are written, and attach it to a cron job. I have hacked together something like this for Code and Coffee, but just haven’t packaged it up into an official Wordpress plug-in yet.
Vacation:
We all need time off, and if you can sign one on board a guest author is great to cover for when you are on vacation. Guest bloggers not only keep your readership while you are away, but they also can bring new readers in.
Weekends:
Take the weekends off! Last year I decided I needed to start walking away from the computer during the weekend. I was getting caught up in constantly needing to stay plugged in, and asides from that I had a bunch of other responsibilities like playing with my dogs, house projects, and enjoying the limited time that my better half has off from graduate school. It’s email only for me on the weekends, and even then it’s limited. The weekends give me a clear head to think of new topics to write about, so the next week I am fresh again.
