Enter Another Web Browser: Safari for Windows

2007 June 11

Today good old Steve dropped the news that Safari is now available for Windows. I am a little behind in writing about this because today I had a case of the Mondays. No surprise that Apple did not release a linux version, as iTunes never made its way to the Linux world. Apple claims that it has faster HTML, Javascript, and Application launch than rivals IE, Firefox, and Opera. I have yet to try it, so I can not comment.

Upon the initial impressions, I will not be dropping my Firefox anytime soon. I like the ability to customize Firefox the way I want it to perform and look and feel. Something that Apple never incorporated into iTunes, so I am not holding my breathe for Safari. To me, and other web developers out there, it really just means one more browser to test web applications on before release. That is if it acquires enough of the tight market share to justify the extra work. I can not wait until the reviews start poring in, and maybe once I escape today I will have time to fire up VMWare and try it out.

Safari for Windows should render HTML and operate exactly like Safari for Mac OS X. If any, this is a boon for the Mac community as web designers working in Windows will now be able to test pages in Safari without having to own a Mac.
